Learn To Sing Like a Pro!
The stars must have really aligned for rapper, Drake, because he was able to garner accolades without even having to go through a lot of the politics that many artists often have to. He had everyone buzzing and speculating about him being signed to different labels, this created a position of power for him. He was not dire to take the first offer that hit the table and instead found a way to have the labels bidding for his services. This takes a fair amount of media savvy and the willingness to create your own hype. Sure, it may seem easier to sign to a label and get their people to work your publicity from the outset, but this will almost certainly undercut your bargaining power when it comes to contracts.
Ever so often, we have seen artists build up ’street credibility’ first, then as a result creat e their own situation and following, which allows for the record labels to take notice. The Internet is a radical tool in this as you now have a potential global audience of millions at your fingertips. You can create and distribute your own videos, you can use the Internet to send out your own electronic press kit / EPK, and you can use it to make contacts. Of course it is not just about the Internet as live shows and good-old fashioned hand-shakes still pay dividends in this game.
The best situation is that you want the labels to come looking for you, and not you looking for them, otherwise, you will not get a great record deal, if a deal at all. This is WHY promotions, publicity, social media of any sort and the streets are your real bargaining tools! To say that you’re getting ready to get signed to a label, means nothing if you have not created a buzz to where the labels will be in an all out war over you and your talents. This is how you still get millions from music…you up the ante and raise the stakes. You turn yourself into a money-making product for the labels and they, in turn, will reciprocate with a lucrative contract…
